I’m David McCauley, founder of Embodied Bear Coaching — and I believe sobriety should be a source of pride, not shame.
Why did I become a sobriety coach in Ireland? Well eight years ago, I made a decision to change my life. I stopped drinking — not because I hit “rock bottom,” but because I knew there was more waiting for me if I did – alcohol was taking more than it was giving. It was making daily life that bit harder – sapping my energy, causing problems in my relationship and costing a fair bit too. “The fear” was all too real on Sunday nights, weekend hangovers were starting to become 2-day affairs and I was tired of pretending and living in fear of what stupid thing I might say or do next time I overdid it…
Since changing my mindset around my drinking, I’ve lived through life threatening illness, divorce, and the loss of a parent — and never once did I think about reaching for the bottle.
Instead, I built a different kind of life:
- One rooted in movement, nature, and deep emotional resilience.
- I trained as a Certified Embodiment Coach and I’m currently a 5 Rhythms Teacher-in-Training.
- I found joy again in cold water swimming, hiking, running, Improv comedy, and joining a choir to sing.
- I moved from the town to the countryside where I live with my partner Billy and a very large Newfoundland dog called Margot, who inspired the name “Embodied Bear.”
My coaching isn’t about meetings, feeling helpless, trusting that every day won’t be the day you relapse. It’s not about a life of penance, deprivation, misery and labels.
It’s about reclaiming your strength, your clarity, and your freedom — without shame, and without losing who you are. Help, guidance and support to live alcohol free is just a call away.
I believe in every client until they’re able to believe in themselves. That’s why I became a sobriety coach in Ireland.
And I know, from experience, that real sobriety isn’t about deprivation. It’s about changing your mindset, genuinely losing the desire to drink, and creating a life you genuinely love.
